The pink wall is not reliably there any more
Most sites are still using photographs from before it changed. Here is what actually happened.
What changed
Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake with no outlet. Lesser flamingos feed on a blue-green alga that thrives in exactly those conditions, and for decades the lake supported them in enormous numbers — the source of every photograph you have seen.
From around 2013, water levels across the Rift Valley lakes rose substantially. At Nakuru that diluted the alkalinity, the algae declined, and the flamingos — which are highly mobile and follow the food — largely moved to other lakes in the chain.
Numbers fluctuate. Some years and seasons are better than others. But the shoreline solid with birds is not the current normal, and treating it as one sets visitors up to be disappointed.
Where they went
Mostly to other lakes in the Rift chain. Lake Bogoria, further north, has generally been the more reliable flamingo lake in recent years — it is hot-spring fed, strongly alkaline and much less affected by the rise.
Bogoria is a real detour: a different kind of day, with geysers, fewer facilities and a hotter, narrower lake. It is worth it if flamingos are genuinely the point of the visit.

Flamingos in variable numbers, often in loose groups rather than dense flocks. Great white pelicans, which are spectacular in their own right and frequently overlooked. Cormorants, storks, herons and over four hundred recorded species.
And the thing Nakuru is now genuinely good at: rhino.
